After 3 1/2 wonderful years in Copenhagen, I am moving back to Toronto to start my career. In my time here, I have really come to love this city- it is small yet metropolitan, it is charming yet fun, it is sophisticated yet full of angst. I am afraid it will be a bigger adjustment moving back to Canada, then it was moving over here. The little things like hanging out at cozy cafes or drinking a beer in the park with friends, is what I will truly miss.

That being said, I am really looking forward to starting my job. I will be working for a great bank, in a division I find infinitely interesting. I am also looking forward to finally living on my own. I have spent the last 7 years living with other people which has been a great time, but am excited about having my own things (ie. Furniture- I am danish after all).

I have made some great friends here. So many in fact, I have not had a day to myself since last Tuesday. Last night I was surprised by my closest friends and my favorite restaurant (which is ironically named Halifax- yes, I ate burgers on one of my last nights in Copenhagen). I will really miss them, and Copenhagen in general… but I will definitely be back.

My room was a mess, having not cleaned for at least a month. I decided to spend the day doing it right. This meant cleaning out under the bed, under the couch etc. The amount of dust bunnies I found was kind of disgusting, but also kind of incredible.

Under the bed I found a bunch of clothes I have been meaning to donate to charity. This discovery prompted me to clean out my closet. Bringing my total clothing donation to what I guess is 40kgs.

In the melee that was the cleaning process I managed to damage my internet socket, ripping a couple of the wires out. This meant spending an hour and a half on my stomach rewiring my ethernet cable.

But hey, my room is clean, my closets manageable and some young kid is about to walk away with a bunch of sweet emo and post-punk band tee’s. A fine saturday.

What is the point of having unions in the public sector. Unions are there to protect workers against egregious work conditions and unreasonable pay, neither is a serious threat when employed by the state. This is an example of a union simply extorting taxpayers.

The demands were not unreasonable, and the teachers pay exorbitant (compared to the rest of the community). Poor decision making on the unions behalf in light of the economic climate. In my opinion, the union got what was coming to them.

Watching the America’s Cup online. It is unbelievable how big and fast these boats are. Alinghi just unfurled a 1100 m2 genoa, they are flying their hull in 5 knots of breeze, going 18 knots.

On monday I went to a wine tasting at Kjær Sommerfelt, the Bodega’s wine supplier. They have a one of the coolest shops/building in Copenhagen, but I guess it is to be expected from the Royal wine supplier.

There were several representatives from the different wine producers there to display and discuss their wines. Plus we had a guide (salesmen) escorting us around, helping us pick the best wines (though I think we managed to taste them all). It was really interesting hearing about how things like mountain ranges and winds affected the taste.

The tasting was great. It was cool tasting wines up against each other and experiencing the differences between wines from the same region. My favorite was a Spanish Tempranillo from the Ribera del Duero region. I wont try to appear smarter then I am so I will just say it tasted fantastic. It just so happen to cost 240kr, wholesale. But there were lots of great, affordable wine.

It was a really fun day.
